Year 10 School Trip to
Goat Island
at Leigh, November 2005
As a group of year 10's, we went on an over night trip to Leigh to learn about marine life.
Once we were in Leigh we went to
Goat Island
to look at all the fish and other living things. Goat island
is a marine reserve since 1975 it is 5km wide and 800m from shore.
A marine reserve is a place where the marine life is protected from us humans, because we're catching too much fish and was just worrying about today not for 10 years time. I seen heaps of fish at Goat Island, the most fish I have ever seen and the biggest snapper have ever seen it was about 1 metre long. Then the next day we went to Matheson bay (unprotected) to compare it to
Goat Island
. At Matheson bay we didn't see much fish but we seen heaps of kina because there is not many snapper and Cray fish and they feed on kina there. At Matheson bay there is heaps of kina because there is no snapper or Cray fish to eat the kina. At
Goat Island
there was not much kina because there was lots of snapper and crayfish there and they like to eat them.
I think that a marine reserve in mitimiti will be great to have cause not only will we save the fish but they can swim out of the marine reserve and the fish numbers will increase and we will be able to gather kai moana for ever.
