EMR is part of the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust and empowers schools and communities by providing the equipment and expertise for a hands-on experience in the ocean. We are based and most active in Northland, although our programmes are also active in other parts of the country.

The motivation behind the formation of EMR came from Samara’s involvement in the Whangarei Harbour marine reserve proposal as a Kamo high school student in 1998.
EMR was first piloted with just 3 Northland schools ans has now grown to be active in 7 regions throughout NZ.
Funding and Support History – Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust
The national expansion of the EMR programme is supported by the Department of Conservation the Tindall Foundation. In Northland the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust received sponsorship for EMR delivery from a variety of sources. Since 2002, the programme has been supported by the Department of Conservation. WWF-NZ supported EMR for three years from 2003 through the Environmental Education Action Fund. The Pacific Development and Conservation Trust made a one-off contribution to Northland delivery in 2005. The Lion Foundation made a significant contribution to EMR in 2006. The ASB Community Trust has supported programme running and delivery costs since 2007. EMR uses Wettie snorkel equipment. Dive Tutukaka has supported EMR since inception. Our website was sponsored by Zartaj, we also receive grants from businesses such as the New Zealand Refining Company and support from Steve Bennett Associates, Fast Signz, Plus Audits & Midas Whangarei.
