Hawke’s Bay Marine Education Programme

Hawke’s Bay Marine Education Programme

The Department of Conservation acknowledges the concept of Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) in the setting up and delivery of components' of the Hawke's Bay Marine Education Programme.

Hawke’s Bay schools - Schools that have participated so far are: Oueroa school, Pukehou school, Norsewood district school, Westshore school and during Term 1 2007 William Colenso Interemdiate.

The images below are William Colenso Interemdiate at Te Angiangi marine reserve.

The Schools take action!!!!!

Do you think we should have Marine Reserves? I reckon we should have Marine Reserves so future generations can see what we have today. With Marine Reserves there is a long term protection of the marine life within the Reserve. So without a Marine Reserve it will upset the food chain and this is an example of what could happen:

Snapper eat kina and kina eat kelp and little fish hide in kelp to get away from their predators. So if too many snapper get taken from humans that means there is an overgrowth of kina and they eat too much kelp. Then there won’t be enough kelp for the little fish to hide in.

Having marine life protected in the reserves enables fish to grow large and also Marine Reserve enables marine life to reproduce young. And when the Marine Reserves get more populated the fish will slowly move outside the Reserve and that is good in two ways. It means that the fish can spread outside of the reserve and that commercial and recreational fishermen can catch more and more bigger fish

There are also some negative things about Marine Reserves. You might live right next to the beach and be a commercial fisherman and fish just outside your house because it is a good fishing spot but with a Marine Reserve you won’t be able to fish there. And some people will get really agitated and angry. Which leads to another problem. It will attract poachers. Nearly everyone knows that poachers aren’t good.

Personally I think we should have Marine Reserves so our future generations can see what we have today.

By Jessica Svenson Oueroa School- Year 6.

Without Marine Reserves in the future life on Rocky Shores will be very poor or there will be nothing left at all. The reason for this is people are taking too much. When too much of one creature is taken its effects the food chain badly. If too many crayfish and snapper were taken the kina population would grow since its main predators had been killed. Something as small as this will affect the food chain badly. As the kina grow they eat more and more . The more and more they eat the lesser their food supply becomes. Eventually in an extreme case the kina may end up dying of starvation. But usually other creatures that eat or use the seaweed or sponge for homes will end up dying because the kina are taking more than their fair share. This is just one of the reasons why Marine Reserves are so important.

The future generations also benefits from marine reserves. If we did not have Marine Reserves in the future they may not see a simple thing like a kina in its natural habitat. Other advantages of marine reserves are that in the future we will have more fish, bigger fish and more variety of fish and other animals and plants.

There are also cons to having marine reserves. There are people that disagree with having Marine reserves as they may be on good fishing grounds. People may also not believe in Marine Reserves because they think they should be able to take what they want from wherever they want.

I personally think we will benefit a lot from Marine Reserves. In the future I think we should have Marine Reserves because without them in the future there would be nothing left.

Pukehou school’s important messages about the sea…

"Save the marine life because everyone needs to see the amazing things in the sea."

"Do not take too many fish now so our childrens children can see the fish."

"We need to keep the sea as clean as possible." "To save the living creatures for the future."

" Trying to teach us to respect the sea for the future."

"Not to pollute the sea."

"To make sure that fish are living for future generations."

"To stop throwing rubbish around and start looking sfter the sealife."

"To tell the people at the port to stop dumping rubbish."

"Lots of people are breaking the rules and taking things from the marine reserve."

"To save the sealife."

"To not pollute the sea and to leave fish and plants for the future."

"Don't take too many fish or there won't be any for the future."

"To save the marine life so that there is some for our kids."

"To listen to the marine rules and not to throw your rubbish in the sea."

Westshore School’s sea rap…

Amelia from D.O.C. came to talk
about the sea

She talked about biodiversity.
We learned it meant variety
of things that depend on the sea.

Megan from the council came to talk about
the drains
ONLY RAIN DOWN STORM WATER DRAINS.

Poisons, chemical, old paint and oils
Pollution will our ocean spoil.
Poisons down the drains will break The food chains.

Fish for the future Mr Petherick
came to say you can do this in lots of ways
Remember to only take the right size.

This will mean you are being wise.

Remember to count and don’t take more than you need

or allowed BECAUSE THAT IS THE LAW!

At Marineland we saw Kelly perform in her show.
She jumped for the ball 5m she could go.
She swam on her tail, she waved us goodbye

Then a Californian sea lion pose to say hi!
Little Hugo, blue penguin, waddled around,
he screeched and squawked a most terrible sound.

She put plastic net on Charvana’s head
If we leave this on the beach Our sea mammals will be dead!
At the aquarium Carol talked biodiversity,
and pollution in deep sea.

We walked around a fishy world of tunnel full of sharks
With a diver feeding them, their teeth left no marks.
The diver found 2 teeth Upon the sandy floor.
And Bens photo was taken inside a mighty jaw.

You go over the waves
You go under the waves
Remember to hold on tight Boom Boom Boom
We zoom around We zoom around
Over the waves we splash and crash Vrrrooom was the engine sound!!!
Yeah!! We Zoomed on the boat right out to sea We looked at pollution That could not be!!!

We saw a seal sleeping on the rock Then we got to see big tarry blocks.
We sped over the waves Crash! Crash! Crash!
We stopped in the water to pick up the trash
Then a big wave came Splash! Splash! Splash!
