National Marine and Freshwater Education Wananga – Conference 2010
Theme - Mountains to Sea – Collaboration for conservation of our marine and freshwater environments in schools and communities.
Purpose
An inspirational professional development and networking opport...
Year 7 and 8 students participated in the EMR programme in term 4, 2008.
Most students had snorkel experience and were very familiar with what a marine reserve was from older students from Opononi Area School who participated in the EMR programme in 2007. Following an introduction to snorkeling in the Copthorne Resort - Hokianga pool the students investigated the diversity and abundance at Goat Island marine reserve, comparing it with the state of the Opononi - Omapere foreshore.
The students identified the Omapere - Opononi foreshore as an issue for their local marine envirionment, which is largely eroded. Holiday homes teeter on sea cliffs and seawalls are required in many places to stop the road falling into the sea. In the past several community groups have planted the native sand binders Spinifex and Pingao in the dunes with the hope of rebuilding the foredune, yet this work has been sporadic and patchy. The work of these groups has been diminished by locals and holidaymakers who still walk, bike and drive among the dunes hindering regeneration.
Over 10 signs notifying the public of the regenerating sand dunes were designed, constructed and errected along the Omapere-Opononi foreshore. In addition, letters were written to the Northland Age newspaper and the local mayor outlining their concerns and seeking help in their quest to ensure a healthy future for the Omapere-Opononi foreshore.
