All 56 students from Whangaruru School are participating in the EMR programme for term 4, 2008.
Following the in class Tiakina Tangaroa presentation the junior class investigated the intertidal area of Little Taupiri Beach.
Local Investigation - Oakura Beach
The two senior classes conducted their first local investigation into the totally unprotected area at Oakura Beach. Rockpools and sandy shore habitat was investigated above water, and the students snorkelled to investigate the rocky reef below water.
The day started off with poor visibility, but as the tide changed a high abundance of starfish and small oysters were seen, and very little diversity in other marine animals.
Poor Kights Trip
A total of 50 students with the support of 20 teachers and whanau made it to the Poor Knights with the awesome support of the staff aboard Dive! Tutukaka's Perfect Day.
The rain that came and went throughout the day didn't hamper those that got in the water.
The students did proud the Haka in Rikoriko cave tradition then upon leaving the clouds settled in and farewelled the school from the islands until next time.
Following the EMR programme all students had not only researched marine biodiversity, and threats to thier local marine environment but they were also able to discuss the positive benefits of marine reserves with their whanau, and the Whangaruru community. Following the trip to the Poor Knights Marine Reserve all students supported the idea of a local marine reserve for themselves and the future generations to enjoy .
