Kaikohe West School took part in the EMR programme again in Term 4, 2009 with coordinator Kim Boyle. Highlights included a trip to their local unprotected area, Matauri Bay after they learned how to snorkel inthe Kawakawa pools and a two night camp where they got to snorkel in three awesome locations - Whangarei Harbour marine reserve (Motukaroro), Whangateau Estuary and the Goat Island marine reserve. The students sawe dramatic differences between the protected and unprotected areas and have been asking local politicians why there are no marine reserves in the Bay of Islands (BOI). They feel that a marine reserve would really benefit the BOI community in many ways. They will be doing the EMR programme again in Term 1, 2010 and hope to link up with other BOI EMR schools to talk more about marine conservation.
Kaikohe West School (Room 5) were involved in the EMR programme, Term 1 2008.
