Rakino Marine Monitoring Workshop 2022

Experiencing Marine Reserve will be running a marine monitoring workshop to help train Rakino locals to monitor the rocky reef fish populations around Rakino Island in the Inner Hauraki Gulf.

The workshop will include a theory session based at Rakino Community Hall, covering survey methodology and fish ID, as well as a practical snorkel component at Sandy Bay (conditions dependant).

Minimum age for the activity is 12 years old, children 14 years and below need to have an adult supervisor present.

When:

Saturday 22nd October 2022 (BU 29th January 2023)

10.30am-12.30pm – Meet at Rakino Community Hall, Theory component of Subtidal monitoring workshop, including intros, methodology, fish ID and H&S procedures

1.00pm-3.00pm – Timed swim fish survey practical component

3.30pm-5.00pm– Workshop debrief, including setting up data recording process

Where: Sandy bay, Rakino Island

Bring your own gear or get free hire* of our mask, snorkel, fins and wetsuits. * You must pre register with sizing to get equipment. Recommended for everyone 12 years and up. Experienced guides and advanced safety procedures will be in place on the day.

Te Kura Moana - Experiencing Marine Reserves runs a series of free and subsidised events over the summer months - we rely on your support to make them happen. We appreciate donations, either cash/eftpos on the day, online or by giving a koha of your time volunteering at a future event. Some people donate $5-10pp.
