Marine Reserve Human Chain

human chainThe Experiencing Marine Reserves (www.emr.org.nz) programme organised the human chain around the worlds first known student-driven marine reserve on September 16th 2009.

The Motukaroro site of the Whangarei Habour Marine Reserve was first proposed by students of Kamo High in 1990 and officially opened in 2006. To mark the third anniversary and celebrate conservation week, over 1000 Northland students, parents teachers and community members formed a human chain around its coastline to create awareness of its reserve boundaries, 13 vessels marked the seaward boundary. The huge event follows the theme of strong student community voice and action.
