Fisheries New Zealand is seeking public feedback on the Ngāti Hei Trust proposal for a temporary (2 year) closure to the eastern Coromandel scallop fishery. The proposed closure will apply to commercial, recreational and customary harvest, refer to map.
The Mountains To Sea Conservation Trust Trustees recognise the significant and often irreversible impact destructive bottom contact fishing methods, such as scallop dredging, is having on our important marine habitats. The Eastern Coromandel scallop beds have plummeted and the stock is in a depleted state. The Trust supports the local iwi, Ngāti Hei and the local community and therefore supports the closure and is encouraging the public to write a submission.
